RaCERS Doctoral Research Associate publishes article on Fentanyl Self-Protection for First Responders
Doctoral Research Associate Eric Persaud was lead author of an article detailing first responder knowledge and attitudes regarding occupational exposures to fentanyl. Working with co-author Charles Jennings, the researchers piloted a survey of first responders. Assisted by several EMS and law enforcement organizations, the survey revealed attitudes and knowledge around self-protection from exposure to fentanyl during “routine” emergencies including traffic stops, investigations, and medical calls.
The paper was published in the 1 October volume of Disaster and Public Health Preparedness.
Findings included significant proportions of respondents with uncertainty about proper protective equipment, and inflated risk perceptions when compared to expert guidance.
