Security at the 2010 Winter Olympics
November 2010 – Security at the 2010 Winter Olympics
RaCERS affiliated researcher Prof. Darryl Plecas, of the University of the Fraser Valley (BC, CANADA), presented findings of an evaluation of security for the Vancouver area Olympics event. The evaluation, the first of its kind to be supervised by an academic institution, funded by the government, and released to the public, provided a fascinating view of the complexities and challenges of securing a truly global event. Equally interesting was a discussion by Plecas on the institutional arrangements that permitted the close cooperation of a team of academics with federal and local law enforcement in Canada and beyond to produce the study, which provided not only description, but evaluation of the strategies employed at the Games.
