RaCERS Faculty On National, International Networks to Comment on Hong Kong High-Rise Fire

RaCERS faculty provided commentary for international broadcasts during the evolving Wang Fuk high-rise apartment complex fire in Hong Kong. The fire, which began in one building spread to six other high-rise apartment buildings, all encased in scaffolding for renovation work. The scaffolding material is thought to have contributed to the fire’s rapid spread. The death toll escalated to 156 people as of December 3, according to the South China Morning Post. Some 30 people are reported as missing.

Director Glenn Corbett appeared on CNN International (11/26) to explain the fire, while Charles Jennings contributed commentary on the next steps in the investigation for BBC News on Thursday, November 27.

The tragic fire promises to be a major focus of investigation and research, as experts study the implications of the fire for codes, standards, firefighting, and occupant management.  The Center held a conference assessing the legacy of the film The Towering Inferno, in December 2024. Proceedings can be found on this site.
