RaCERS Announces Fall 2022 Seminar Series: UAS, Floods, Grenfell Tower

The Christian Regenhard Center for Emergency Response Studies (RaCERS) is pleased to announce their Fall 2022 Seminar Series. All events will be held online only.

On October 26, 2022 we will host a panel of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) experts to assess the state of the field, and adoption of this technology in the emergency response realm. Panelists will be Tony Basile, Chief Operating Officer of NUAIR, Tony Hallet of Unmanned Response, and Sean Falconer of Empire Drone Company. This panel promises to be an authoritative update to licensing, emerging tech, and best management practices across the public safety domain.

November 9 will see Katie Graziano, a Coastal Resilience Specialist with New York Sea Grant, in partnership with the Science and Resilience Institute at Jamaica Bay. In the neighborhoods around Jamaica Bay, she works to build collaborative networks of information and resources about urban flooding and other climate impacts. Her presentation will focus on the NYC Community Flood Watch Project and NYC FloodNet, two programs that are helping residents, scientists and governments track, document and respond to urban flooding. As sea level rise and extreme precipitation intensify, the data and products from community-based flood monitoring and sensor technology both offer insights on the current and future state of flooding in New York City.

We close out the Fall series with a discussion of the Grenfell Tower fire and ongoing inquiry. The Grenfell Tower fire served as a global wake-up call for the design and fire safety communities. Our speaker, Peter Apps, author of the forthcoming book Show Me the Bodies: How We Let Grenfell Happen. Through his reporting with UK’s Inside Housing, Apps has distinguished himself as the leading journalist covering the fire and the extensive public inquiry in depth. This promises to be a valuable discussion with lessons for regulators, fire safety advocates, architects, engineers, and the fire service.

Registration for these events is required: Sign up here, and Zoom login details will be sent a few days before the event.
