October 2012 – “Protection of Urban Areas – DHS’ National Urban Security Laboratory”

Dr. Lawrence Ruth, Director of the Systems Division at the US Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) National Urban Security Technology Laboratory (NUSTL), located in Manhattan, offered a review of ongoing DHS research. Dr. Ruth reviewed the Science and Technology Directorate’s research efforts, and addressed the specific projects being led at NUSTL. NUSTL partners with first responder organizations on development and testing of technologies for numerous challenges, ranging from radiation detection to identification of explosive materials. NUSTL has a unique role among DHS labs as the interface with practitioners working to secure urban areas from the hazards of terrorism and other disasters.
