Dedication

The planning for this event began in Spring 2001. The members of the Planning Committee met on September 10, 2001, to continue work on assembling the conference program. Our keynote session was to have been the bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993 as an exemplar of the complexities of emergency management in urban areas. We tentatively selected a panel of Ray Downey of the Fire Department, Doug Karpiloff of the Prot Authority and John O’Neill, retired FBI agent and then Chief-of-Security for the World Trade Center. All were lost in the attack of September 11th.

Among the losses within the immediate College community were Kevin Donnelly, a Lieutenant in the Fire Department and a student in the Protection Management graduate program, and Andrew Fredericks, an adjunct faculty member in the College’s Fire Science Program.

John Jay College of Criminal Justice of The City University of New York estimates that more than 100 alumni and current or former students, primarily members of the fire and police services, were killed in the attack or the collapse of the World Trade Center.

The horror of this event and the incomprehensible human loss will be remembered always. We dedicate this conference to the victims of the September 11th attacks, in the hope that we may minimize the loss of life from natural and man-made disasters now and in the future.
