February 2014 – “Dispatch During Hurricane Sandy kick’s off RaCERS Spring 2014 Series of Lectures.”Chris Carver, Deputy Director of Dispatch Operations for FDNY (pictured below) opened the lecture series with an expansive perspective on public safety dispatch in the United States. He addressed challenges facing the field and discussed the rapid advances in technology coming that will change the industry dramatically. Carver also warned that the industry was not ready, and that a lack of professional standards, limited educational opportunities, and lack of interest from many public safety leaders threatens the future of the industry. Carver also discussed the historic number and duration of incidents handled by public safety dispatch during Sandy, and the benefits of the planning and technologies in place that kept the system operational during severe challenges.
