Since emergency medical services were merged into the FDNY in 1996, the workload of EMS has increased steadily. In the meantime, most of the promised improvements from the merger have been deferred. The Citizens Budget Commission of New York’s most recent report “Reviving EMS: Restructuring Emergency Medical Services in New York” suggests that additional resources to support EMS response should be directed to create and staff ambulances, and questions the FDNY’s reliance on engine companies to support emergency medical service delivery.
The report met with immediate denouncement from fire unions, clamoring to increase their staffing. Please join us with this presentation by Mariana Alexander, principal author of the report. Her presentation wil be followed by a reaction form Glenn Corbett, and moderated discussion and Q&A from stakeholders.
Mariana Alexander is a Research Associate at the Citizens Budget Commission, where she provides research and analysis on the New York City budget and services, focusing on homelessness services, New York City Health + Hospitals, and the Fire Department.
